Benton County Court History
Benton County was formally organized in 1850. Early county business took place in Jeremiah Russel's home, where Judge Aaron Goodrich presided over the first District Court session in 1851. After moves between Sauk Rapids and Watab, court was held in rented rooms until an 1866 courthouse was built with a stone foundation and fireproof vaults.
Voters moved the county seat to Foley in 1901 to place county government in a more central location. A yellow brick, two-story Romanesque Revival courthouse designed by S.H. Haas and built by A.G. Wahl followed that year. The annex came in 1974, and a 1979 renovation changed the old courthouse exterior into the current plain rectangular form.
