Benton District Court History

Benton County was formally organized in 1850, with Sauk Rapids named the county seat. Early county business took place in Jeremiah Russel's home, and Judge Aaron Goodrich presided over the first District Court session there in 1851. In 1853, county commissioners took bids for a two-story courthouse, but the official history says there is no record that it was built.

The county seat moved to Watab in 1856, where a church and lot were bought for courthouse and jail use. The project became financially controversial after the county bonded beyond its capacity to pay. By petition, the county seat moved back to Sauk Rapids in 1859. Court was held in convenient places until rented rooms were used in 1864, and a courthouse with stone foundation and fireproof vaults was built in 1866.

By 1901 voters wanted a more central county seat, and Foley became the county seat. A yellow brick, two-story courthouse was built that year in Romanesque Revival style. The official history identifies S.H. Haas as architect, A.G. Wahl as builder, and the cost as $12,900. The 1974 annex and 1979 renovation later changed the building's exterior into a smoother rectangular form.

The daily calendar is another practical point. Benton County calendars are posted at 7:00 a.m. each business day and updated hourly, but they do not list every matter handled by the court. Printed calendars outside courtrooms or in the courthouse lobby may be the most current source for same-day hearing information. If a case is missing from the online calendar, that absence should not be treated as proof that the hearing was cancelled.
